Keep your motivation Stella, it was something I always wanted to do myself. Kinda like a family thing. There was at least one person in each generation of my Dad's family that could play guitar, banjo, or the mandolin. My Dad lost the movement in his left hand due to a work related accident and could never play the same as before, and now that he is gone, I wish he would have taught me to play.

I started piano lessons in the 1st grade, then smashed my finger in a storm door and almost lost the tip, so I never went back to any lessons. So carry on and never give up, and yes I know the tips of your fingers are prolly killin ya...

back to the music... Stella? keep practicing, girl... you gotta get good enough to have a virtual jam session recording with Rock

Ha! Now that'll be the day! But it does give me motivation to keep practicing. . . say, I'm learning acoustic guitar and Rock plays electric. That doesn't work together, does it? (Oh my, I think I left that wide open for comment . . . )

guitar, banjo, mandolin... sounds like you grew up with bluegrass?

it also sounds like you should take up playing something.. guitar or piano... it's in your genes... sounds like it's in your heart, too... it might do you good...

Her parents are from Kentucky, you ought to see the collection of all the above in her Dad's closet.

He let me try em all before he passed away.

When we are over there visiting Mom I often play the old Fender acoustic that is to die for!!!

Her family is wonderful lucky for me.

Lethas parents were from Kentucky and it was the same way with them... almost everyone in the family played or sang like a songbird... all passed down from family members... I wasn't really a bluegrass fan until I "had" to listen to it... then I came to love it too...

some of those old instruments fetch HUGE prices... I used to look at some of them and think "that old thing?"... then I find out that old thing would easily sell for $5k-10k in a heartbeat... they really do sound different than a new one and I guess that's part of what makes them so desireable... edit - that's also where I gained an appreciation of instruments...

playing your own ancestors instruments is priceless though...

Perhaps I'll photograph her Dad's collection (with her Mom's permission) when I am living down there and post em' for you to see, He has a banjo, mandolin, OLD violin, a Hagstrum electric, the Fender acoustic and one or two I can't think of at the moment.

that ain't no violin.. that's a fiddle!

the Hagstrum is the one lighting up my curiosity... just from its name... Did you plug it in and cut it loose? the banjo and mando could be jewels too...

OK... that just may be a fiddle.

He has a few small amps over there too but I didn't hook it up. I'm pretty sure Mom will let me take the Hagstrum back to our place and try it through some serious PEAVEYs which is the ONLY way to play electric guitar in the ROCK handbook.

well not being able to play, I can only go by reputation others give an instrument... and old Hagstroms have a great reputation...

When Letha would play old instruments for the first time, she said they'd speak to her like ghosts... telling her songs they'd played in their past... and stories of their lives...

maybe you can record something for us to hear as you bring it's old soul back to life...

YES, YES, this would be great to see, so please do!

And YES, YES, YES to Roi's suggestion to play some tunes with the old family instruments and post the results here. That would be fantastic IMO!

And, thanks Idolwild for your words of encouragement. I agree that you should try to play one of those heirlooms or the piano because you probably do have music in your genes (as Roi said).

This is getting really interesting and fits right in with the intention of this thread - all right!

annnnnnnnnd... yea.. I don't think there's really a difference between a fiddle and a violin... except in the attitude in which it's played LOL

we used to go around to thrift stores and yard sales looking for "gems"... at one store, there was this instrument behind the counter and we stood there for about 5 mins waiting for someone to let us look at it... I finally asked someone to come help us and since I was obviously interrupting her, well.. she was perturbed...

in a curt tone, she asked us "what do you want to see?".. and Letha said "can I take a look at the fiddle, please".. and in a real snooty voice, the clerk said " well.. ACTUALLY it's a violin" as she handed it to us...

Letha took it... tuned it just a bit... and played a little bluegrass tune... I turned to the clerk and said "actually.. it's a fiddle" and glared at her...

needless to say.. we didn't buy it.. and with the clerks attitude, I wouldn't have bought it unless it was a stradivarius
