| I think I heard something on the Radio that Brad Paisley will be a judge next season. I wasn't sure though. Anybody know more? |

If so, that would be a helluva lot better that that loudmouthed diva they just hired.

Monkey do you hate all singers who have ever utilized melisma in a song? Mariah is an amazing singer. Is she loudmouthed. Seems like she doesn't really talk much is my impression of her. My fear is she will just love all the contestants all the time. J Lo tried to be objective and actually give good advice. She was the person who took her job seriously rather than just try to say I'm famous so I can just get by on being a celbrity. I will miss the professionality she brought. I am not saying she was great but at least she tried. I am willing to reserve judgment on Nariah until I have seen her for about 10 episodes. |

Do I 'hate all singers who have ever utilized melisma in a song?' No. Do I hate singers who overuse melisma in their singing? You bet.
Mariah is an automatic channel-changer for me (and I stay far away from the stations who play her type of music). She typifies everything that is wrong with AI.
The 'advice' given by the AI professional cheerleaders is next to useless to anyone who is legitimately trying the have a music career - it is 80% stock cliche, with the remainder being outright lunacy.
If you want 'judges' who have an even chance of actually judging and/or giving usable advice - hire Harry Connick and/or Aretha Franklin. Forget the overly-melismatic fame whoores who are looking for an additional 15 minutes of fame.

So if Mariah sings a song you automatically hate it and change the channel every time. Considering how much the general public listens to and buys her music your opinion is definitely in the minority . I just don't get all the hate. What exactly has she done to you to call her a fame whooore who is looking for an additional 15 minutes of fame? She has had many years of fame so far. Do you think she is now irrelevant and her only way to get noticed again is to take the AI gig ? I am just exploring your feelings regarding Mariah because things are slow around here and I am bored. Thanks for replying. Do you have the same or similar level of hate for Whitney, Christina, and Celine? How about Kelly Clarkson? She has been known to use a lot of melisma from time to time. |

No, I do not like the genre of music she sings - and I particularly don't like the way she sings that particular genre. If she came out with an album of sensitive singer/songwriter tunes that she wrote and played herself, I could be talked into giving it a listen; but as long as she is a 'diva' - she is beyond the pale.

We've had this disagreement before: whether one is in the majority or minority has the loosest correlation to right/wrong - or talented/talentless. To follow your logic, McDonald's would then be haute cuisine, Jersey Shore would be 'must see TV', and the Twilight series would be cinematic epics. It doesn't wash, bucko.

Exactly.

You betcha. As a genre of music, I dislike 'pop divas' immensely. There are probably another dozen you can add to the list, along with the Michael Bolton-like male singers.

To be honest, I don't listen to the type of stations she gets played on, so I don't know her catalog. And I'll reiterate: I'm not against melisma per se - it's a basic tool of the vocal arts. I'm against the overuse of it. 'From time to time' doesn't sound like overuse...

Rumor has it that she is getting paid the big bucks to be the judge that "goes mean". I hope not, but it's possible. If anyone knows what getting kicked while you're down feels like, it's Mariah. (Can we say "Glitter" boys and girls?) For a while it looked like the industry had written her off for good and I cheered her on when she made her triumphant return to the Top.
I'm not sure where I read the statement, but I agree. "She'll do well if she doesn't forget the show is about the contestants."

J Lo surprised me. I had some doubts about her joining the panel. She totally won me over.
Btw, the one heavy set, blonde teen boy that didn't make the cut was the big winner that season,IMO. I know getting passed over broke his heart, but as he gets older he'll realize how many million other guys in the world would crawl over a mile of broken glass to be held that long by J Lo. |

I agree totally about the advice. We've all seen contestants get hammered for doing exactly what they were told to do just the week before. It's one of my biggest frustrations with the show.
I would LOVE to see Harry Connick take a judge's seat. He would bring class, humor and practical advice to the show, for sure. |

Harry won't do it, because he doesn't need/want? AI's 15 minutes of fame...
Aretha is a bigger fame-*****-diva than Mariah/JLo/Celine combined... and weighs more than all of them combined also... not that there's anything wrong with that... but Aretha schooled the others on being a Diva...

I will grant you that. I brought her up more because she doesn't sing 35 notes when 3 will do as a matter of habit. Once I started describing Mariah as a diva, however, that definitely would disqualify Aretha as well. Good call.

We have never had a disagreement on the point that you stated we have a disagreement on. All I was doing was pointing out that you are in the minority with your disliking everything that Mariah does. When have I ever stated that being more popular or selling more recordings makes anyone better. I made my post to discuss not to disagree or argue. I do happen to like music by all of the pop diva's that you happen to dislike. Sometimes they annoy me too but it doesn't take away from their talent. Barbara Streisand annoys me almost all the time but I also consider her the best talent ever in female pop music. Anyway nice to get some chat going on here. I miss everybody I am curious about one thing. What was Mariah's last hit song and how long ago was it. I was thinking she was still pretty relevant but maybe I am wrong about that. |

If you're asking me, you're asking the wrong guy. I don't listen to pop radio.
Just so you know where I'm coming from, these are the stations I listen to:
- the only over-the-air station I listen to is the local NPR classical station. Everything else has a 30-song playlist for the genre they stick to, and are stultifyingly boring.
The rest are internet streams:
- WUMB Boston (contemporary and traditional folk)
- Radio Paradise (eclectic)
- KOZT-fm, Mendocino (classic rock, NorCal style)
- A few Live365 channels that play similar music to the above stations ('The Promise', 'Dream Catcher', 'Newgrass', etc)
Back in the day I was much more the hard rocker, but I've mellowed immensely in my dotage.
This is why I don't think much of AI: they stick to the same old tired songs, and try to imitate the same old tired divas. I know a lot of people like it, but that means nothing - no one has ever gone broke underestimating the taste of the American public. When AI starts doing songs by Alison Kraus, Bjork, Gillian Welch and Kate Bush instead of the same old Whitney/Mariah/Aretha/Dolly retreads - THEN I'll be a happier camper.

I agree with you that we seem to get the same songs over and over again. I am looking forward to hearing more rockers and people doing music by symphonic metal/goth bands particularly Within Temptation. The problem is to win the artists need to have mass appeal so mostly middle of the road type stuff is performed. Kris Allen over Adam Lambert you have to be freaking kidding me. Lee DeWyze or Crystal Bowersox? What more needs to be said. |

you can mess with "great" voices or good voices (Whit, Mariah, Celine, etc) but you can't mess with perfection without getting bricked... |

I don't disagree.
My point is that there are other modes of talent out there other than overwrought, bombastic melisma-maniacs to pattern yourself after. AI keeps promoting the same tired old blowhards. There's a reason why WGWGs keep winning - most AI voters want something other than a third-rate Dion Carey.
