Great to see you are on board for Duets UV. I would love your thoughts on something. So many duets are guy/girl love songs. Being honest they work better for me when the girl singing it is good looking, but that certainly isn't critical. So what do you think? Should the appearance of the artist be factored into how they are scored and who should win this competition? IMO John Glosson is the best vocalist in the competition but he is very nerdy/dorky looking.

I've mentioned this on many threads here ... George Michael has one of THE best male voices of the 80s and possibly of the last three decades!

Great to see we recognize one freaking awesome voice when we hear it. I am wondering if you know what I mean when I say pure or clean. For example I think Elton John and Phil Collins both have great voices, but they have very distinctive tonality to their voice. I might not be using the right words to describe my thoughts. George Michael has a cleaner voice is my best way of describing the difference. I am not saying he is a better singer.

You didn't ask me, Lance, but I have to chime in here. I have always thought that Elton John has a great voice and I agree that George Michael also does. I never really thought about Phil Collins but you may be right about him as well . . . good to see we can actually agree about something at least once, Lance.

As for "Duets", last night I kind of lost interest into the second half of the show. I don't really remember who is who (names) as far as the contestants go. I think the pros overshadow them honestly. Also, I am confused a little about how they are judged and are supposed to be judged. I wish the ballots were not secret. I think part of it is how well they can sound/blend with the mentor's voice and that is tougher with some than others. John Legend's voice would be the most difficult to blend with IMO, and Kelly's and Jennifer's voices are so powerful it would be tough to come up to that standard. While Robin generally sings in falsetto (not my favorite), I see he can bring it down to harmonize better with his team singers and I appreciate that about him. I would feel less threatened singing with him ( if I could sing, that is) and I think his performance with his second young lady from last night on the first show (sorry, can't remember the song or her name) was the sexiest and most enjoyable performance yet for me.

I can't really rank the contestants yet, but as to personalities of the judges/mentors (in no particular order):

Kelly - she seems like a really nice "regular gal and I like her
Jennifer - real "country" kind of loud but not at all mean, yet she does get a little "hoakey" with her duet performances which I'm not crazy about.
John - he seems a little subdued and maybe into himself and he is perhaps overly critical in a much too serious manner. I am a little wary of him but I still like him.
Robin - he just seems like a fun guy on the sexy side. I used to think his dad was cute and he definitely looks like him, and he appears to be very tall (which I like), and I am surprised I like his voice because I thought he only sang in falsetto. He has a quirky-ish sense of humor and that is appealing to me as well. He seems to like Kelly and her contestants, so that's a plus. Robin may be my favorite along with Kelly, with a slight edge because he's attractive to me.

If I watch next week, maybe I can rank the contestants. Somebody goes home, right? I didn't even catch if the viewers get to vote on the bottom 2-3 or what. Like I said, I lost interest during the last 45 minutes or so even though I had the TV on but was doing other things at the same time.

I'm a redhead. Deal with it!

Sorry about not asking you but I was referring to what UV had done. I am making it a point to differentiate between the contestants. What do you think about my question should appearance be factored into the scoring of the contestants. On Idol I give appearance zero credence as I am just listening to the performers voice and care about nothing else. However when doing Duets particularly guy girl love songs it does help me get into it when the girl is good looking. Just being honest. So should looks matter or not?

Lance, I think we all know that looks shouldn't matter, but we all also know that of course they do, at least to many people, especially on these TV shows that allow us to see the singers. Imagine back in the days when we first heard music on the radio and then bought LPs where you may or may not have seen a picture of the artist. I was around back then and I definitely see a difference where appearance is heavily weighted against talent and performance. I say "against" because sometimes a person can be discounted on unattractiveness despite the level of talent he or she may possess. Think about it. Would Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen or Meatloaf or many other successful musicians have been as popular today if they were just introduced? Sadly, I feel the tide has turned to superficial criteria and that is a real shame. Even Adele, who is madly talented and a beautiful woman IMO, is criticized because she is not a size 0 - ridiculous! Thankfully, in her case anyway, she is still popular although more of an exception to the rule. JMHO.

Is it necessarily correct that appearance shouldn't matter at all. It is a performance after all. To me this is more significant in a duet than in a solo performance. I mean we don't want unattractive actors or actresses in the lead romantic roles in movies. I think in music it is far less important to me.

I prefer George Michael over many male singers. His voice is very clean and he sounds as if he has a few octaves/great range.

Elton John and Phil Collins are good too, but yes, not as "clean" in my opinion. A bit different in tone.

I think Daryl Hall has a great tonal quality about his voice as does Freddie Mercury. Those two and George Michael along with Michael Jackson are 4 of my all-time favorite male voices.

Dennis Deyoung is another one with a clean tone, but perhaps a bit more shrill in tonal quality at times.

I guess if it's a "love" song then it would help if the singers really seemed like they were "into" each other. Sex appeal does sell some duets. I didn't really feel any connections in the duets on Idol but did see a bit of chemistry in Elise's and Phillip's duets (plural, since they did a few together!).

I think a great song for John and Jennifer would be a song that's not really a duet but could be made into a duet, which is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. I can hear John singing "turn around" and Jennifer singing "every now and then i get a little bit lonely..." etc etc. Then they could sing the chorus and the bridge together. I wish they could take viewer suggestions because in my opinion (musically speaking), they would blow this out of the park!

UV I think you think like me a lot regarding these singers. I am glad you get what I mean about George Michael having a cleaner voice.

You know it was Meatloaf who sang Total Eclipse of the Heart with Bonnie Tyler right? That song was written by Jim Steinman. Jim wrote every hit Meatloaf ever had. I loved how in Glee they used two Steinman songs in winning the National show choir championship. Meatloaf was certainly not a good looking dude but he sang great duets like Paradise by the Dashboard Light and I would do anything but Love. He just sang them with great voice and style.

Total Eclipse would be an awesome choice for Jennifer and John except of course if they sing it like Bonnie and Meatloaf did Jennifer will get way more of the vocal.

I think the wrong two singers were in the bottom 2 tonight.

I think Olivia was the worst singer tonight.

First of all let me apologize for not being here last night. I have been pushing for this and then I didn't show up. I was working on a used Jet Ski I bought to help me survive the Lake Havasu City AZ summer and watching Lebron James with one of the greatest playoff games ever.

Thanks for the comments. I forget who Jennifer's other singer is but totally agree that John is the best amateur singer on the show. I will watch the show on Hulu and come back with comments.

OK I am going to make a brief comment about each of the artists and the songs they do tonight. First off was Robin and Alexis. I thought Alexis was very good last week. I was very surprised at how lacking the duet of Killing Me Softly went. She of course went home tonight and judging based on this performance it just wasn't high quality enough for this level of competition.

Jennifer and John do How Great Thou Art which is a very majestic song. John surprised me with an actually soft and sensitive version of it. Jennifer and John blended amazingly. Maybe this is a bit over the top but when I hear John singing it like this he reminds me of Josh Groban and if he and Jennifer continue doing songs of this type I think he has a legit chance to win the competition.
