It's funny how you don't find stuff out because it just never came up...

Was talking to our daughter today and I found out that our second oldest grandson met Colton when he attended our local prom with one of girls from here. Our grandson has a band called The Everyday Losers and he and Colton talked music for a good bit.

Apparently he is just as down to Earth as he seems. The girl that got the prom wish read on the show might just get a shot.

Getting this thing back on topic (sorry to be the killjoy ), I'd be cool with Colton winning. IMO, he's the 2012 version of Switchfoot.

But if Colton does win, the judges will look like idiots for cutting him right before the top 24 line last year. Sure, the arguments will be the extra tv time, extra year of seasoning, etc, all helped polish him for this year. But if he wins it all this year, it'd be hard to believe that he wouldn't have at least made the top 12 last year (and probably would've lasted at least well into April, if not May).

Not that it takes anything much to make the judges look like idiots...

Coulton has every base covered except one-he's from New York, isn't he? I have to say he'played the game perfectly-he's dropped just enough hints to let every Southern tween girl know he goes to church on Sunday just like they do. He's learned how to give the required dreamy look into the camera and unlike Phillip, he's varied his songs enough not be be boring AND he's got that "aw shucks" personality like Scotty did. He's also a very clever re-arrainger of the songs he picks. He and Steven Tyler are about as opposite as two people can get and he's gotten Steven Tyler to come around.

But he's beatable, just not by Elaine, Jessica, Hollie or Phillip. Elaine must come across as a grandmother to our tweeners. Jessica's "BeBe Chez" alter ego is a little freaky to me, let alone some 14 year old girl. Hollie should have waited a few years and Phillip, although good looking and from the south, doesn't seem to want to play the game. (So why did he sign up?)
No, I think his biggest competition may come from the southern belle Skylar or southern gospel guy Joshua. I wouldn't have said that before last week, but after Joshua attacked that Bruno Mars song I have to say that he's not afraid to put a little stink on it and sing less than clean lyrics.
But overall, yeah, I think this year's is Colton's to lose.

From the first time I heard him in auditions, I thought Phillip had this thing wrapped up. But, I agree he is not playing the game. He still may be in the final two...with Colton. I thought Jessica could break the two up and squeeze in there. But, not with a bottom finish this past week, and the ridiculous push they are giving her. That whole save was so staged and heavy-handed, they doomed her.

Heh. Rez Band. I had that LP back in the day. It stayed with the ex when we divorced, tho. I only made sure I kept the Bruce Cockburn and Mark Heard LPs...

I am hoping for a come-out-of-nowhere win ala Kris Allen for Elise who I think has by far the most talent this year.

Great post. You point out very well kind of like I did at the beginning of this that it isn't about talent it is about sucking up to the right groups of people. It is about demographics. Good looking awe shucks Christian guy has a great chance to win. I just don't see how he can lose.

Jessica should certainly win based on talent. But even if she doesn't, Jimmy Iovine has the contract waiting for her. She will be huge some day! And she is just the right age to be groomed for stardom!

I have to say that my confidence in Colton winning this whole thing was slightly shaken tonight. He performed two songs very mediocre while Phillip the other male singer with the same demographics very much outperformed him and might have leapfrogged him. The shame is that Joshua Ledet is easily a better talent than either of them but it doesn't matter what he does because he doesn't have those demographics.

I agree that Colton has the nice-guy good-looking non-threatening thing, as well as the demographics. But... as bad as America is at judging talent, they can feel the natural musicality of the artist. How they connect to a song. Whether or not they really get it. Do they make you sing along, cry, dance, pump your fist, or just smile.

That said, Colton doesn't always "get it." Phillip does. Skylar does. To a lesser extent, Jessica does.

Elise (likability issues), Hollie (talent issues), and Joshua (demographic issues) are the only contestants I'd rule out.

Another factor to consider is that AI is dying to have a female winner and, even though I don't think they'd fix a vote, there are loads of editing decisions and other subtle means of pushing voters in a certain direction.

At this point, I think they'd be happy to have anyone other than a white guy win it. So, while a female would be the top choice for TPTB, Joshua would be acceptable too.
